Jesus’ favourite speech form, the parable, was subversive. Parables sound absolutely ordinary:…As people heard Jesus tell these stories, …They walked away perplexed, wondering what they meant, the stories lodged in their imagination. And then, like a time bomb, they would explode in their unprotected hearts. ~ Eugene H. Peterson
Parables are not tidy moral lessons, but living stories that invite us into God’s surprising reality. Quite literally they are ‘odd stories’ thrown down alongside ordinary lives. Parable [para -‘alongside; bole –‘thrown’] work quietly and deeply—using ordinary images to unsettle our expectations, open a window onto the strangeness of God, and reveal a love that heals and re-sets what is broken. Like the gospel itself, they are meant to be lived and experienced as a “resetting of broken bones”.
In this retreat, we will dwell with one such parable, allowing its gentle challenge and mercy to meet us where growth feels slow or hidden. In prayer, silence, and shared reflection, we come not to analyse the story, but to inhabit it—and to discover how God’s patient, renewing work might already be underway in us.
Retreat Includes: Guided reflections on Luke 13:6-9, times of silence and spaciousness, optional creative engagement. Refreshments provided.
