 (Arrivals from 9am) Start 9.30am – 12.15pm. COST: £25

You are warmly invited to a morning retreat, Walking the Desire Path with Julian of Norwich and Psalm 62.

David Farrier writes –  ‘Paved roads show us where we ought to go, but desire paths are made when we step off the road and let our hearts decide the way. They seek out the most direct connection between where we are and where we wish to be. Worn by the pressure of passing feet, they’re declarations of a kind: there is another way.

Much of life asks us to keep going—to follow what is expected, to stay on the path laid out before us. Yet beneath this, quieter ways are forming: paths shaped not by pressure, but by longing, by attention, by grace.

This retreat morning is an invitation to step off the road, and into rest.

The image of the “desire path” helps us notice where we are already being drawn. These paths are not forced; they emerge gently, worn over time by what matters most. They do not demand effort so much as openness.

At the heart of the day will be the still, spacious trust of Psalm 62:
“For God alone my soul waits in silence…
Truly my soul finds rest in God.”

This is a rest we do not create, but receive—a quiet settling into a deeper holding presence.

Alongside this, we will reflect on Chapter 5 of Julian of Norwich’s Revelations of Divine Love, where she is given a vision of Christ’s suffering. Yet even here, what emerges is not despair, but a profound revelation of love: a love that is steadfast, unbroken, and at work even in pain. Julian does not strive to explain or resolve what she sees; instead, she beholds it, and in that beholding discovers a deep assurance.

Her response is not effort, but a kind of resting attention—remaining with what is shown, trusting that love is present and active beyond what can be understood.

In this way, Julian’s vision becomes a kind of “desire path”: not a system to master, but a way of seeing and receiving, shaped by love itself.
