You are warmly invited to a day retreat, Walking the Desire Path with Julian of Norwich and Psalm 62.
David Farrier writes – ‘Paved roads show us where we ought to go, but desire paths are made when we step off the road and let our hearts decide the way. They seek out the most direct connection between where we are and where we wish to be. Worn by the pressure of passing feet, they’re declarations of a kind: there is another way.‘
Farrier speaks of how he almost missed one such path, absorbed in the demands of work—blind to a crossing that was ordinary, incidental, and yet hinting at a hidden life unfolding alongside his own. He suggests that desire paths offer grace rather than instruction: they do not command, they invite.
The image of the “desire path” offers something quiet: a way that is not driven by demand, but shaped by longing… and discovered slowly, underfoot.
This retreat day is an invitation to step off the road, and into rest.
At the heart of the day will be the still, spacious trust of Psalm 62:
“For God alone my soul waits in silence…
Truly my soul finds rest in God.”
Here, rest is not something we must earn. It is a returning—a settling of the soul into the One who holds us. The psalm offers a quiet resistance to the urgency of ministry, inviting us to be held rather than to hold everything together ourselves.
Alongside this, we will sit with the wisdom of Julian of Norwich and her Revelations of Divine Love. Julian’s visions are marked not by striving, but by a profound resting in God’s love—“All shall be well” spoken not as resolution, but as deep assurance. In her, we glimpse a way of knowing that is gentle, patient, and grounded in being held securely within divine love.
Together, these voices open a path of rest:
not withdrawal, but restoration;
not escape, but a returning to what is most true.
Through spacious silence, reflective questions, and unhurried prayer, we will practice listening deeply—without rushing to fix, name, or spiritualise what we notice. You do not need to know Julian, understand everything. You are invited simply to notice, to listen, and to rest—trusting that beneath every longing, God’s love somehow is already beautifully at work.
You are invited to come as you are – and to rest.
